Breast Cancer Awareness Month is an annual international health campaign organized by major breast cancer charities every October to increase awareness of the Breast Cancer and to raise funds for research into its cause, prevention, diagnosis, treatment and cure. The Breast Cancer Awareness campaign is made to give information and support to those affected by breast cancer.

Breast cancer is by far the most common cancer in women worldwide, both in the developed and developing countries. In low and middle income countries the incidence of Breast Cancer has been rising up steadily in the last few years due to increased urbanization and adoption of western lifestyles.

If you see statistics for India, the figures speaks for themselves. Roughly 1,15,000 women were newly diagnosed with breast cancer in India in 2008 and there were some 53000 reported deaths. There are more cases of breast cancer than this. It is time we take steps to make people aware, encourage breast Cancer awareness and stress on early detection of breast Cancer.

At present, there is insufficient knowledge on the causes of breast cancer therefore, early detection of the Breast Cancer remains the vital element of breast cancer control. When breast cancer is detected early and if adequate diagnosis and treatment is available, there is a good chance of treating breast cancer. If breast cancer is detected late, curative treatment is often no longer an option. In such cases of late detection of Breast Cancer, palliative care to relief the suffering of patients and their families is needed.

The majority of deaths occur in low and middle income countries due to breast cancer, where most women with breast cancer are diagnosed in late stages, mainly due to lack of awareness on early detection of Breast Cancer and barriers to health services.

WHO tries to promote comprehensive breast cancer control programme as a part of national cancer control plans. The proposed early detection strategies for low and middle income countries are awareness of early signs and screening by clinical breast examination in demonstration areas. Mammography screening is very expensive and is feasible only in countries with good health infrastructure that can afford a long term breast cancer programme.

For many of the years, a loop of pink ribbon has come to symbolize breast cancer awareness, and today the image of a pink ribbon can be found emblazoned on thousands of products, from apparel to dishware to office supplies. But there is more to awareness than just wearing pink.
