Test Details & Preparation

  • Platelet Count Test is done to determine the number of platelets in a sample of your blood as part of a health exam to screen for, diagnose, or monitor conditions that affect the number of platelets, such as a bleeding disorder, a bone marrow disease, or other underlying condition.

  • Platelet Count Test is done as part a routine complete blood count (CBC) when you have episodes of unexplained or prolonged bleeding or other symptoms that may be due to a platelet disorder.

  • A blood sample drawn from a vein in your arm or by a finger-stick (children and adults) or heel-stick (newborns).

  • No preparation is needed for a Platelet Count Test.

  • If the platelet count falls below 20,000 per microliter, spontaneous bleeding may occur and is considered a life-threatening risk. A person with a very low count may be given platelets through a transfusion.

  • A high platelet count may be referred to as thrombocytosis. This is usually the result of an existing condition such as cancer, anaemia, inflammatory bowel disease etc.

  • Individuals who have this condition may be at risk of excessive clotting (thrombosis) due to the excess platelets, but they may have bleeding problems, as the platelets may not function normally.
