What is the bone marrow scan?

Bone marrow scan is the procedure that involves the collection and examining bone marrow, it is a sponge tissue that is present inside some of your larger bones.

Bone marrow scanning reflects the working of bone marrow tissue that whether it is healthy and making normal amount of blood cells or not. This process is used by the doctor to magnify bone marrow disease that includes cancer as well as origin of fever also.

Bone marrow consists of a fluid portion and solid portion. During bone marrow scanning process, doctor uses a needle to a minute amount of solid portion as a sample. While in bone marrow aspiration, a needle is used to withdraw the liquid portion.

When bone marrow biopsy and bone marrow aspiration are performed together at the same time, then it is called bone marrow scan.

Why is Bone marrow scan done?

Bone marrow scan is done to take out the detailed information of bone marrow and blood cells.

If your blood test report is abnormal or unable to give the detailed information about the problem for which test has been prescribed then in that case also bone marrow scan will be prescribed by your doctor.

A bone marrow scan can be performed by your doctor:

  • To examine disease or situation that includes bone marrow or blood cells
  • Determine the stage or progression of a disease
  • Check iron levels and metabolism
  • Monitor treatment of a disease
  • Investigate a fever of unknown origin

Bone marrow biopsy and aspiration may be used for many conditions. These include:
  • Anemia
  • Blood cell conditions in which too few or too many of certain types of blood cells are produced, such as leucopenia, leukocytosis, thrombocytopenia, thrombocytosis, pancytopenia and polycythemia
  • Cancers of the blood or bone marrow, including leukemia’s, lymphomas and multiple myeloma
  • Cancers that have spread from another area, such as breast, into the bone marrow
  • Hemochromatosis
  • Fevers of unknown origin

A bone marrow biopsy or aspiration gives different but supportive result. In most cases both are examined together.

What happens before bone marrow scan?
  • Before the procedure blood pressure and heart rate will be checked and minimal amount of anesthesia will be given to keep you cozy.
  • Most of the people will be given local anesthesia at the site where procedure has to be performed to reduce the pain.
  • In case if you are worried about the pain then you will be given an IV medicine so that you will be relaxed during the bone marrow scan.
  • In this procedure from front hip or at top of hip the aspirate and biopsy is collected and the area where injection will be injected is cleaned and marked by needle.
  • In the bone marrow aspiration the aspiration is collected from breast bone in the adults and from the lower leg bone in toddlers from the age of 12 to 18 months.
  • Patient will be asked to lie down straight in their abdomen or lie at one side so that only operating site would open and it will become easy for the doctor.
 
What is the risk associated to Bone marrow scan?
Bone marrow scans are normally similar process, in this process obstacles are rare but sometimes it includes:
  • People with low platelets can lead to excessive bleeding.
  • People with weak immune system can suffer with infection after this test.
  • At the biopsy part long lasting discomfort is expectable.
  • Perforation in the breast bone can cause heart or lung problems.

Preparation before the test
  • No tests that use barium for at least 48 hours prior to your bone marrow scan
  • You may eat and drink as usual
  • You may take your prescriptions as normal
  • Bring a list of your medications
  • Bring your doctor's written order for the exam to your appointment
